Description of the session:
Aubre Tomkins will present didactic material via lecture and discussion, and hands-on opportunities including demonstration and role-playing.
Measurable behavioral objectives or learning objectives/outcomes:
The participants will be able to :
1. Clearly educate their clients on the GBS screen, how it is performed, and what the results tell us.
2. Clearly explain guidelines for prevention and treatment.
3. List the antibiotics used to treat GBS and how to determine which agent is appropriate.
4. Describe the appropriate parameters for each type of antibiotic used.
5. Explain and demonstrate how to administer IV antibiotics for the prophylactic treatment of GBS.
6. List the signs, symptoms and treatment of anaphylaxis
Outline the content for the session including number of minutes
-GBS screening, testing, prevention and treatment guidelines
-Overview of all possible antibiotics in use, how to determine which agent to treat with and the parameters for each one
-Overview of the administration of the antibiotics, monitoring for proper time of administration
-Signs and symptoms of possible allergic reaction, anaphylaxis, and appropriate response
-IV medication therapy: initiating and maintaining an intravenous line, assessing for infiltration and proper placement, and managing drip rates
Describe how learning objectives/outcomes will be assess:
Because of the small group size, the teacher will be able visually assess each students skills. By observing participant behavior, the teacher will be able to assess their IV skills. And through role playing, the participants will demonstrate mastery of counseling skills to educate their clients on antibiotic use for GBS prophylaxis.
